Without looking, if I asked you which team is currently number one is run differential in the MLB, who would you guess? The Dodgers? The Yankees? The Padres?
All good guesses. Yet, the answer is the San Francisco Giants. The Giants start today with the highest run differential (+26) and best road record in MLB. While those are impressive stats, there is another one that is not as impressive yet. That stat is the Giants record against teams with current winning records. San Francisco is currently 1-0 in that category which says that the Giants haven’t faced the toughest schedule to date. By comparison, the Yankees are already 5-5 against teams with winning records and New York has only played 13 games.
Of course, this is a one game sample size and it is early in the season so all stats should be taken with a grain of salt. However, the question that some fans online and bettors in the sports books are starting to ponder is regarding how good are these Giants? Can this team compete with the Dodgers and Padres over the course of a season?
Well, this series is a great test for San Francisco. The Yankees are the best team that the Giants have faced this season. With each passing game, the answers to those questions surrounding the Giants will become clearer.
In the meantime, we will look at the numbers and see what the oddsmakers are thinking and how the market is responding. At times, that can be one of the better predictors of how a team may perform.
